Proofpoint signs definitive agreement to acquire Tessian

Proofpoint, a prominent cybersecurity and compliance company, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Tessian, a frontrunner in leveraging advanced Artificial Intelligence to guard against accidental data loss and evolving email threats.

Subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions, the acquisition is slated to finalize between late 2023 and early 2024.

Specializing in protecting organizations from social engineering attacks, Proofpoint employs award-winning Artificial Intelligence and large language models (LLMs) to thwart threats and offer real-time threat insights.

AI-based detection has demonstrated significant efficacy in recognizing threats that target individuals, such as email fraud and supplier-based attacks, and in preventing data loss from either negligent or malicious actions.

The acquisition of Tessian will augment Proofpoint’s existing threat and information protection platforms, incorporating layers of AI-driven defenses aimed at mitigating risky user behaviors like misdirected email and data exfiltration.

According to Ponemon research, misdirected emails and misplaced files persist as leading causes of compliance violations and unintentional data loss within organizations.

In 2022, 65% of all data loss incidents transpired via email, and nearly two-thirds of organizations endured data loss or exfiltration due to employee errors in email usage. Consequently, security teams spend an average of 48 hours to identify and rectify a data loss or exfiltration incident attributed to employee negligence.
